A BANGLADESHI construction worker died on Sunday night when a van crashed into the lorry he was travelling in.

Mr Ibrahim Hawlader Abdur Rahim Hawladwe, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene about 10 minutes after the accident. It occurred in Woodlands Avenue 12 at about 10.35pm.

He had been sitting in the back of the lorry with fellow workers and the impact of the crash hit him the hardest.

The unmarried man had been working here for slightly more than a year.

Five other Bangladeshi men, also construction workers, were injured and admitted to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Two of them have since been discharged, while the other three were still warded last night, with various injuries including a dislocated shoulder and a fractured arm.

The lorry driver, a Singaporean, sought outpatient treatment at the hospital.

Police said the driver and two front-seat passengers of the van were not injured, and the trio have been arrested to assist in investigations.

The lorry was travelling from the labourers' work site in Senoko Avenue to their dormitory in Joo Chiat when the incident happened in Woodlands Avenue 12, in the direction of the Seletar Expressway.

Their employer, the owner of SKK Construction Servicing, who wanted to be known only as Mr Kamal, 46, said the lorry had a canvas covering and that there were only seven people in it at the time, including the driver.

Mr Kamal said this is the first time an accident like this has happened to his staff.

He has arranged for his worker's body to be flown back to Bangladesh today.

He described Mr Ibrahim as a good worker and said he was saddened by the loss.

The man's family has been informed of his death by his relatives in Singapore.
