Audrey Kang The New Paper Thursday, Aug 08, 2013 Reproduced on  AsiaOne SINGAPORE - What was supposed to be a quiet Sunday morning turned into a life-saving attempt after his wife shook him awake. Mr Hari L.R. Arjunan, 38, was sound asleep when his wife, Madam Shantha, woke him, telling him frantically that someone had fallen into the canal next to their flat. Madam Shantha, 36, a housewife, said: "I heard a loud noise and my dog was barking nonstop. So I looked out the window. "I saw a lorry on its side and I rushed to wake my husband. I told him to go help because nobody was helping." The accident happened on Sunday at around 7.40am on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), near the Jurong East Avenue 1 exit. ST, Published on Aug 07, 2013 6:52 AM   CONSTRUCTION worker Nagaraj Sathiaraj, 25, arrived from India less than a month ago to earn a living and help support his family of five back home. But disaster struck last Sunday, just about 20 days after he set foot in Singapore. Mr Nagaraj was one of nine workers injured when a BMW rammed into the back of the pick-up truck they were in. He only spent 20 days here and his family has no money. When I called them, his mother was crying on the phone," said Mr Muthukaruppan, who has been doing excavation work in Singapore for over 15 years and is married with two children. He added that his nephew, a bachelor, still has fees of between $6,000 and $7,000 to pay the agent who brought him here. "Now he cannot work so how

Crash reignites debate over how workers are transported

Straits Times, Published on Aug 06, 2013   By Maryam Mokhtar And Jalelah Abu Bakar SUNDAY's crash on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) which left a pickup truck on its side and nine construction workers injured has reignited the debate over how workers are transported. Companies are being urged to start hiring buses for their workers instead of using lorries. The issue came under the spotlight in 2010 when three Chinese nationals were killed after the overloaded lorry they were in skidded and overturned. In the wake of the public debate which followed, the Government brought forward the deadline for new safety rules requiring, for instance, light lorries which ferry workers to fix canopies and higher side railings.
