A SUSPECTED drink-driver was arrested yesterday following a crash that left nine people injured and a lorry lying on its side.
The man in his 20s was behind the wheel of a BMW that smashed into the back of the pickup, which was carrying workers from China and India.
Seven of them were reportedly flung from the lorry when it tipped onto its left side.
One landed in a nearby canal, where he is believed to have remained for about 10 minutes before good Samaritans from nearby Housing Board blocks used a ladder to get him out.
The driver of the pickup and the passenger next to him - both Indian nationals in their 20s - were said to have been trapped inside the stricken vehicle. Meanwhile, the car appears to have hurtled on, coming to a halt only after ploughing into the road divider.
At least four men are believed to have sustained multiple fractures in the crash, which happened at about 7.45am near the Pan-Island Expressway's Jurong East Avenue 1 exit. The car driver, who is understood to have been drinking, was not injured.
Yesterday, the workers told the Chinese evening dailies that they saw the car zooming towards them, but had no time to escape. They said the lorry spun twice, before tottering over onto its side.
The men's injuries reportedly included head, foot, and rib fractures. Some of them needed immediate surgery. A spokesman for the Singapore Civil Defence Force said five of the casualties were taken to Alexandra Hospital.
The other four were taken to the National University Hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
