A MAN was killed and 12 other people injured in an accident
involving a car and a lorry ferrying workers on the Pan-Island
Expressway (PIE) early yesterday morning.
One of the 12 was critically injured and is now in intensive care at Changi General Hospital (CGH).
The accident happened before the Simei Avenue exit heading towards
Tuas, said the police, who received a call for assistance at 7.22am.
There have now been at least 10 fatalities involving heavy vehicles in the first three months of the year.
The dead man was identified as construction worker Magalingam Rajesh,
29, from India. He had been in Singapore for eight years, according to
his colleagues.
The 12 injured people, including the female driver of the car, were
taken to CGH. As of 5.30pm yesterday, five of them, including the car
driver, had been discharged.
The men travelling in the lorry, including its 52-year-old driver Lee
Soon Hin, suffered a range of injuries, including fractured ribs and
abrasions, said their employer, air-conditioning contractor Jackly
Engineering.
The impact of the collision between the two vehicles apparently
caused the lorry to flip over onto its right side. The car was heavily
damaged at the front.
The incident caused all three lanes of the PIE to be blocked until 8.40am, resulting in a major jam.
The lorry was on its way to a construction site in Bugis from Loyang
Drive. It was a closed-top lorry with an aluminium canopy. Eight of the
men on board were sitting on the floor at the back of the lorry,
including the fatally injured worker.
Mr Lee, who suffered elbow abrasions, told The Straits Times at CGH
yesterday: "There were no other cars nearby. I crawled out by myself
after the accident."
The car driver, believed to be a 26-year-old woman, has given a
police statement. Both drivers are now assisting in police
investigations.
